| These pictures were taken during the 13th month of my journey. I learned a lot about locing during this period. I had been constantly twisting my hair, spritizing with water most of the time, but with "hand in loc disease" you don't realize how much you are twisting your hair dry without realizing it! Dry twisting your hair causes your rootbeds to weaken. Even though at the time you don't really notice it, you are actually twisting the loc so much you are actually twisting it right out from the roots. During this period, I was convinced my hair was totally loced. Now, anyone, even a loc newbie can look at these pictures and see the locs are not firmed up yet. But, because it had been over a year of locing for me, and because when I washed my hair I didn't have to retwist, I had to be loced. I wanted to know if there was a way to really tell if you were loced, so I posted the question to the Lovinlocs Group, and Camille (Doc) Robbins said the easiest way to tell was to use a conditioner on your locs after you wash them. If they stay loced, their done cookin'! If not, you still need to wait longer. I had just taken these pictures a couple of weeks before I asked that question. I love thise pictures...This is a period of my life when my mind was so peaceful, so happy...Things were finally falling in place for me. My locs wear beautiful, I FELT beautiful...it was at this point that I really realized I was doing it, really doing it!! You will never know the relief I felt. Nice, full, healthy locs...what more could I ask for? So a couple of weeks later, I washed my hair and then put on some ORS Hair Mayonaisse to condition my locs.... this was it, the really big test! Trust me when I say I was extremely nervous as I did this. I remember the night like it was yesterday. It was the night they first showed Michael Jackson's movie/video "Ghosts"... I knew I was going to watch it, so I put the ORS on, went into my room, and started watching the show. What I didn't think about was the video lasted an hour...well, you only leave the ORS on for 30 minutes tops!! But, me, being me, left it on until the show went off. Then I rinsed it all out, and I started to freak out! The ends unraveled, the hair that had lovingly been matted just an hour ago was already starting to work it's way down and out of my locs! OH nooo... At first I believed it would just settle down when it was dry, but within a few days I knew my impatience was going to be my downfall! You see, on top of leaving the conditioner on too long, I had been twisting my locs in whichever direction I wanted to at the moment, instead of continuosly twisting them clockwise. My locs had become what is known as "chewy", especially at the sides and back....You can really see what I am talking about in the pictures with the blue top on...See how the locs are not smooth and cylinderal? This is called being "chewy"....I had just set myself back almost a year... and that peace of mind went flying out the window..... |
